Since 1972, the home of folk music and the favourite venue of artists from all over the world between September and April has been Calgary Folk Club.

2020 has disrupted our in-person performances, but we're excited to virtually present Tom Jackson's The Huron Carole as a special holiday treat. For more than three decades Canadian philanthropist, actor, and singer Tom Jackson has officially ushered in the Holiday season with his legendary seasonal concert-series and fundraiser, The Huron Carole. For the first time ever, its 33rd season will be presented virtually. The show's audio and video quality are exceptional and we're excited to present it. Calgary Folk Club November Shows Rescheduled
John Wort Hannam and Tim Williams performances to take place in January 2021.

Though the restrictions introduced by the Government of Alberta on November 12, 2020 do not specifically forbid in-person performances, the spirit of the message is clear: Stay home and do not get together in groups, especially not in indoor spaces.

Since COVID disrupted our plans for the 2020-2021 season, we have said that we would return to performances when it was prudent. Hosting a show right now is an unnecessary risk to our volunteers, performers and patrons.

Therefore, the Calgary Folk Club is rescheduling our November 2020 shows to January 2021. This applies to both the in-person and online events. We're looking forward to presenting John Wort Hannam on January 15, 2021 and Tim Williams on January 29, 2021.

Single tickets (in-person and online) purchased through Showpass will be rolled over to the new performance dates. If these don't work for you and you'd like a refund, please contact ticketing@calgaryfolkclub.com

Flex passes reservations that have been made for the November shows will be annulled. If you are interested in attending the new dates, please send an email to ticketing@calgaryfolkclub.com to make a new booking.

Dear Calgary Folk Club community,

We need to continue to create spaces and provide opportunities for artists to share their work and talent. We appreciate your on-going support to the Calgary Folk Club.

Live at Dalhousie Community Centre

Are you ready to experience live music? We have a plan:

1	With lower audience numbers and physical distancing, we are supporting cohort groups seated together in groups of 1, 2, 3, or 4.
2	Per Calgary bylaws, everyone must wear a mask in the venue.
3	There will be no tables, liquor, or food. Patrons will be seated and bottled water will be provided at the door.
4	Reservations will be required to attend the live event. Contact information and guidelines for booking reservations will be finalized and provided soon.
5	All patrons must remain seated while in the venue except when utilizing the restrooms.
6	Hand sanitization spray will be provided at all entrance and exit doors.
7	Following current guidelines, the concert will begin at 7:00PM and end by 8:15PM
8	In the event of a sell-out, artists are prepared to run a second show beginning at approximately 9:00PM. There are still some questions regarding logistics of a repeat concert and so we will be supporting a waitlist.

John Wort Hannam (AB)

John Wort Hannam

LISTEN

Born in the UK and raised in southern Alberta, John Wort Hannam earned a degree in Native American Studies and taught on reserve in Alberta before becoming a prize-winning songwriter and performer. John is known for his unique take on the dramas of common folk, and for mapping landscapes of the human heart and his beloved Alberta in iconic songs such as Church of the Long Grass. With a keen eye for the quirky and lyrics that evoke the stories behind his songs, John has been nominated for a JUNO, three Western Canadian Music Awards, a North American Folk Alliance Award; and he received the 2010 CFMA Contemporary Album of the Year award. “You’re dead a long time,” John says, “so you better get out and make something beautiful.” We’re welcoming John back for his seventh CFC appearance!

Tim Williams (AB)

Since his start in the coffee houses of Southern California, Tim has toured much of the world and released more than a dozen recordings over a career spanning more than fifty years. Also active as a studio musician on several instruments, producer, teacher in clinics and music camps from Australia to Slovenia to Alaska, and composer for theatre and film, Tim has amassed an impressive collection of nominations (JUNOs, Maple Blues, etc.) and awards including Best Solo/Duo and Best Guitarist, Solo/Duo, at the 2014 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. Best known as a performer of pre-war acoustic blues, Tim also incorporates elements of the Mexican and Hawaiian music he grew up hearing, plus original tunes which have been praised by the likes of Tom Russell, Ian Tyson, Willie Nelson and more.

All singer-songwriters draw on their life experiences, but not too many get to draw on military service in Afghanistan and Rwanda for inspiration. Sincerity, empathy and humanity are hallmarks of Tim Isberg’s oeuvre and stage presence, as is his love for Alberta that runs through songs like “Come Hell or High River.” Check out his latest release Running on the Edge (2019).

Calgary’s own Cara Luft makes a long-awaited return in her Calgary Folk Club debut with JD Edwards, hard on the heels of their phenomenally successful, award-winning sophomore album Assiniboine & the Red (2019). Having previously won over folk festival and club audiences across North America as a founding member of the beloved and sorely-missed project The Wailin’ Jennys, lightning has struck again for Cara in the seamless, apparently instant chemistry she and JD have managed to conjure, both live and in the studio. If you’re looking for evidence of the healing powers and magic of music to be a unifying force in these times of darkness and division, don’t miss The Small Glories.

A huge hit at the Club his first time around, Alberta’s lovable, globe-trotting troubadour pays us another visit to share his straight-talking wit, everyman charm and superbly-crafted, deceptively simple songs. With his Edmonton-based backing band The Second Chances (Bramwell Park, mandolin, banjo; Melissa Walker, bass), he fearlessly asks hard questions in disarming ways, such as how Christ would be received today if he showed up as an immigrant refugee. Scott Cook distills life lessons he gleaned from the ten years he spent travelling the world as a footloose spirit. And he transmutes those lessons into precious gifts of song for fans and true believers on many continents, believers like you and me.

Jeffery Straker (SK)

Jeffery Straker

Classically-trained piano savant and pop-folk-indie songwriting auteur Jeffery Straker learned piano on his family farm in Punnichy, SK. With eight full-length albums to his credit, Jeffery has built a devoted international fan base, playing 100 shows a year to audiences from Europe to Ghana to Chile to Panama, not to mention youth workshops in Resolute Bay, Canada’s remote northern outpost. Not one to underachieve, he has also played sold-out orchestral concerts and he is a star of the annual CTV Telemiracle telethon in Saskatchewan, helping raise millions for Kin Canada. His story-driven songs, which he aptly calls dirt road confessionals, have one foot on Main Street but his heart remains on the prairies.
